Plants are autotrophic, meaning they produce their own food. This is done through the process photosynthesis to create glucose sugar using energy derived from sunlight in addition to carbon dioxide, and water.

Although plants are not the only photosynthetic organisms (as many protists are photosynthetic), they play a major role in providing energy for the food chain. With the minor exception of thermal vent communities, the energy that powers all life on Earth is dependent on photosynthesis' ability to transform solar energy into usable chemical energy in the form of glucose sugar. When plants are consumed by herbivores, and those herbivores are in turn consumed by their predators, this energy is passed along and is ultimately the sole source of energy in the food chain. Without photosynthesis life would not exist as we know it.
