I supose it is because we look at the world as a comunity that we are a part of and it is humane thing to do to help people that are in urgent need of help. Australia is involved in conflicts around the world and this also leads to situations where those that help your cause are in danger in their old countrys.

All refugees to Australia, whether they come here legally or illegally, invited or uninvited, are fed, clothed, housed, educated, assessed as to their motives and attitudes and, all being well, usually integrated into the community at large, all this is done at Australian taxpayer expense with no obligation on the refugee other than to obey the laws of the land. This is why Australia is regarded internationally as a "soft touch" or "easy pickings".
