In The Giver, Jonas has to conform to his
community's expectations and has to be the same
as them to do this. Text evidence can be found on
page 70 "females lose their braids at age ten, and
males, too, relinquished their long childish hair and
society, he has to conform and dress a certain way.
Another example of this can be found about
dressing to signify your conformity and therefore
conformity is a theme in The Giver. In A Wrinkle In Time, conformity is a theme. On
page 5 when Meg does not act the way her
classmates do and expect, a girl says to her "After
all Meg, we aren't grammar school kids anymore.
Why do you always act like such a baby?" Meg
wants to conform with the society around her and
fit in. In chapter nine, when Meg confronts an
extension of IT, IT suggests that Camazotz is a
perfect society "Everybody exactly alike." Meg finds
that everybody conforming as one being is not a
perfect society and that being the same does not
put everyone on the same level saying "No! Like and
equal are not the same thing at all!" This shows that
in the beginning of the text Meg longs to
conform to society's expectations but by the end
thinks that everybody conforming and being alike is
bad and embraces that she does not meet her
worlds expectations.
Both "A Wrinkle in Time" and "The Giver" are young adult novels that explore themes of conformity, individuality, and the search for truth in a dystopian society. They both feature young protagonists who challenge the status quo and question the rules of their worlds in order to discover their own identities and truths.
If you talk solely about one place in each book, then yes, they would be similar. If I chose to compare Camazotz and the Community, there would be many similarities. There is the thirst of sameness in the community, and everything is so organized in each community.
1. Recievers such as Jonas and Gabe, as well as those who have the potential to be one, have pale, light grey eyes. Others have dark grey.
2. In chapter 3, we learn Jonas once stole an apple from the recreation center and was chastised over a loudspeaker. Although the speaker did not use his name, Jonas and his parents knew it was directed at him, and Jonas is ashamed and apologizes.to the Recreation Director.
3. Jonas saw a flash of red in the apple. Before, he, like all other members of the community, saw only in shades of grey. However, in chapter 3, when the event occurrs, all we know is that the apple "changed". We do not know what happened until later.
4. Larissa, an old woman Jonas bathes, tells Jonas a speech talking about the exciting life "Roberto" was read before he was released. However, Larissa says every speech is written to make the person's life sounds meaningful. She says that she believes every person's life is meaningful. Here, you can point out that Lois Lowry is satirically implying that although people in the community believe they lead meaningful lives, they actually lead meaningless lives directed by society. So you could argue that no person has an exciting life.
5. Every morning, families share their previous night dreams with eachother.
6. The treatment for stirrings are pills, which every person in the community takes after feeling their first romantic attraction to another human.
"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury, and "1984" by George Orwell are often compared to "The Giver" for their exploration of dystopian societies, control, and conformity.
