The US is broken up into states, the size of which was initially arbitrary (depending on the size of the charter obtained from the King of England) but later done more systematically as western land was obtained, which is why out west states are more rectangular. Hawaii, being an island, doesn't really have any borders. And Alaska, which is not connected to the continental 48 states, has a border entirely with Canada.
