The dot on the bottom gear goes straight up and the dot on the Top Gear points straight down when the timing chain and gears are installed correctly.
on the two gears that the chain runs on, there are "dots" close to the teeth. align those "dots", and the chain will be in time.
Dots on gears
Both dots are at 12 O'clock with the #1 piston is at TDC. With #1 piston at TDC, The crank gear ( dot ) will be at 12o'clockAnd the cam gear ( dot ) will be at 6 o'clockThat makes both Dots stright over top of each other
The engine will not run.
The dot on crankshaft at 12 o'clock and dot on cam gear at 6 o'clock the centerline of crankshaft, dots on gears, and centerline of camshaft should all be inline.
When the engine is at #1 TDC, the dot on the crankshaft sprocket is at 12 o'clock, and the dot on the cam sprocket is at 6 o'clock.
The dots will be together.
There should be dots on both gears. Place cam at 6 o clock crank at 12. They will line up together in between the 2. It's easier if you put engine in this position (old gears with cover off) before you remove the old chain.
There will be either dots or arrows stamped on both the crank and cam gears for alignment, just make them meet on the same gear.
One or two dots near the outside. They should line up with the dots on the crankshaft.
the timing or the firing order? the timing gears have 2 dots that line up when the timing is correct at top dead center. the firing order 18436572 and the cylinders are numbered as following, driver side 1357 and pass side 2468
you must remove all of the parts on the front of the engine, water pump, altenator, etc. after the water pump is removed you will see the timing cover, remove it also. next you will see the timimg gears and chain, there will be a dot on each gear ,just line up the dots and remove .then pull out the cam, using old gear, and there you will find the lobes on the cam.
