The similarity between colliding and separating tectonic plates is that both are areas of geologic instability. Also, the two regions have a better chance of being a source of vulcanism because of the nature of the instability. Even though they might be seen as "opposites" as regards the action of the plates, there is a way they are alike.

Where plates collide, one plate pushes under the other one in subduction. Volcanic action is likely as the subducted plate is forced below and melted below the crust. If plates are divergent, or separating and pulling apart, the rift is essentially a "crack" in the crust. Magma can upwell from below to heat the area, and again we see a possibility of volcanic action. Thermal vents dot the divergent plate boundaries down through the middle of the earth's two large ocean. In either subduction or divergence, geologic instability results and vulcanism is possible.
