High resolution satellites (e.g. those operated by commercial satellite companies like GeoEye or DigitalGlobe) are used to take pictures of Earth. These salllites continuously capture high resolution imagery then transmit it to a ground station for processing. The selection of pictures is automated and programmed into the satellite from the ground.

Pictures taken by an astronaut could be taken from a hand-held digital camera. The astronaut in that cause manually focuses the camera on a point of interest and takes the picture.

One process is automated by machine (with instructions from humans) and the other directly by a human.
