We are a lapidary and normally we can cut tiny stones. the smallest stone we cut is 1mm It all depends on the materiel Sapphires and hard Stones can be cut to 1mm stones, but Stones like apatite and kunzite can not be cut so small.
If you are going to set the stone in a ring or pendent as a center Stone It has to be a descent size at least 10mm x 8mm ( approx 3 ct )

This would be called a gemstone.
you need to fire polish it so that you can avoid being cut..
In an unpolished or a rough gemstone the reflection of light is poor. To take out the brilliance of a gemstone it has to be cut and polished. For a diamond RBC (round brilliant cut) takes out its true worth.
It depends on how much money you are willing to invest. If you simply want to tumble polish the stones and then drill a hole, the cost is comparitively minimal. If you want to cut gemstones and polish them then you are speaking of some serious money. The process of tumbling semiprecious gemstone is fairly simple, but the results can be less than desirable. Unless you are considering learning jewel craft, it is better to buy your working material pre cut.

The side of a cut jewel is called a facet. Facets are flat, polished surfaces that are cut into a gemstone to enhance its brilliance and sparkle. The number and arrangement of facets can vary depending on the cut of the gemstone.
That depends on what gemstone (diamond, ruby, etc.) it is, the size of it, the quality, and the cut.
polish it with a cutting compound and then wax after and cut it with a buff
