According to the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America breed standard, a true Jack Russell is between 10 and 15 inches high at the withers (top of the shoulder blades). However, there are a lot of JRTs or mix breeds that don't quite conform to this standard. Generally, you won't get one over 15 inches at the withers - that would be a Parson Russell, which is slightly different. Source: See related links
the jack russell is 10 to 15 inches of shoulder
In our experience, Chihuahua Terrier mixes (depending on what Terrier breed in involved) tend to run under 10 lbs, fully grown. Some are a good deal smaller. "Pooka," our long-haired Chuhuahua-Terrier from Australia at 17 months is about 5.5 lbs at most. under a foot tall and about 10 pounds ( chihuahua X jack Russel )
Jack Russell Terriers are VERY hyper. So, if u have a big back yard and are able to walk/run with it several times a day then yes. they do like kids, but they also have to be properly trained like every dog, and prefer adult companionship.
The Jack Russell Terrier was bread by a man named John Revere Russell who lived in England. He specificly bread these dogs to hunt foxes and other small animals. Jack Russells are bread in England and Ireland and are excellent dogs. They have a reputation to be mean or hyper but all they like to do is jump, play and run and be loved. I have experience with Jack's because I own 6 of them. Jack Russells are the strongest dog in the small section, due to them working. They can be made into good guard dogs if you have a few of them.
A 5lb dog would be something like a Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier.
