There is not a Byzantine legacy to western Roman Europe. The reason for this is explained in the paragraph below. If anything, there was a degree of legacy to medieval Western Europe. Byzantine art was influential in medieval Italy and some other parts of Western Europe. Contact with the Byzantines in the First Crusade contributed to the development of Romanesque architecture, which was the predominant type of architecture in Western Europe in the 10th and 11th centuries. The capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453 led to Greek scholars fleeing to Italy. They taught Greek and classical Greek science, philosophy and literature, and thus created an interest in ancient Greece.

Byzantine Empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part. The Romans did not use this term, they called it Roman Empire or Romania (this referred to this empire and not the country which was later called Romania). The eastern part of the Roman Empire continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years after the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. This part of the empire was not Catholic. Its religion was Orthodox Christianity.

Why was Constantinople more advanced than western Europe?

Constantinople thrived especially when the western portion of the Roman Empire fell. It served as perhaps the most advanced part of Europe at that time, as Western Europe was in complete chaos. Western Europe had been controlled by the Roman Empire for nearly 1,000 years and the Empire just fell. This is what forced Europe into the Dark Ages, where Europeans lived in fear and barely left their home. It also prevented Western Europe from advancing. Meanwhile, in the surviving eastern portion of the Roman Empire, or now called the Byzantine Empire, the people were thriving, especially those in the capital, Constantinople. Nothing was preventing this empire from advancing, and that's just what it did. The Byzantine Empire went on to rule for another 1,000 years!

What was the importance of Constantinople?

When the Roman Empire was split into two, and the Western Roman Empire was then taken over by the Germanic invaders, for a thousand years Constantinople (ex-Byzantium) was the capital and centre of the Roman (Byzantine) Empire, maintaining the Graeco-Roman civilisation in a Europe degrading into the Dark Age. It maintained this remnant of civilisation for long enough for the Renaissance in central and western Europe to begin the long hard road to modern civilisation, until the Byzantine Empire was snuffed out by the Turkish invaders.
