The radiator hoses are held in place with a clamp. The clamp goes around the hose and can be tighten with a screwdriver. Loosen the clamp on each end of the radiator hose to remove the hose.
Between the bottom radiator hose and the radiator. On the engine side of the hose.
Look in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator to the thermostat.

You have a top radiator hose and a bottom radiator hose.
The hose that goes from the overflow to the bottom of the radiator on a 2002 Windstar is the bypass hose. It allows coolant from the overflow to return to the radiator as it cools.

The thermostat is located in the upper radiator hose. The radiator hose will need to be removed to get to the thermostat.
I'm not sure about the S, but in the 2002 with just the 2.5L the therostat is in the lower radiator hose. Mine went out at about 90K miles and I had the same question.
To change the thermostat on a 2002 Montero Limited, drain the radiator halfway through the plug on the bottom. Remove the upper hose assembly and unbolt the thermostat. Install the new one and fill the radiator.
