Any engine's fuel mileage can be improved by : replacing air filters regularly (or using an aftermarket cleanable air filter such as a K&N filter which costs more short term and slightly sacrifices filtration, but allows better air intake), keeping tires at correct inflation, use the a/c less often, drive slower, accelerate more smoothly and slowly, change oil regularly, make use of fuel injector or carburetor cleaner (as appropriate), replace or clean fuel filters, remove unnecessary weight from the vehicle (those sand bags we find so useful in the winter just use up fuel in the summer).
There are also fuel additives on the market that claim to improve fuel mileage, most or all of which have been disproven.
There are aftermarket engine computer chips and add-ons available to alter the way the engine runs which can affect fuel mileage either way. Consult a pro if considering this.
