Read, read, and read some more. Devour technical books, articles, blogs, podcasts (reddit.com, stackoverflow.com). One of the things that will help you hone your skill is to read the code of other people. Think about it. How do you think great writers become great? They read other great writers (standing on the shoulders of giants and all that).
Get involved in an open source project. To find out on github what the community is excited about: https://github.com/trending List projects by language. Find one that interests you and get to work. Often projects will give info on how to contribute on the main page of the project.
