Firstly, and most obviously, study hard! Take a lively interest in all aspects of science, because it's all interlinked, and don't neglect your English and Maths, because all the courses you'll want to get on will require a good competency in them. Also, maths is the language of science and biologists of all descriptions need it to handle their data. Read widely, not just about the sea, and not just about science. Start with books about people such as Jacques Cousteau, and simpler texts on marine animals and plants and progress from there. Watch some of the wonderful television series about wildlife, for instance the David Attenborough ones like 'Life On Earth' and 'The Living Planet'. The internet has a lot of good stuff, but you'll make more sense of it with some basic background.

If you live near, or can spend time at the seashore, go beachcombing and investigate the rock pools. (Be careful, the rocks are very slippy!) Learning to swim well would seem a good idea too. Marine aquariums are fascinating and great sources of knowledge.

As you get older you can find out which colleges offer courses that would interest you, and what their entry requirements are. You've chosen a fascinating area of study, so the best of luck to you!
