Drill an 1/8" hole 1/2" from the edge of the cap. Insert an ice pick or smaller drill bit through the hole and into the ring on the inside. It should lock the two parts of the cap and you should be able to twist the cap off without damage. You can continue to use the cap, so your "check engine" light will not come on until you can purchase another. I have used the method on Jeep caps, and it is posted on other forums. Others have responded that it has worked flawlessly.

No, no. DRILL A HOLE? I wouldn't chance the buildup from heat from a drill coming into contact with explosive gasoline vapors.
Instead, use some elbow grease and simply pop the freaking top of the cap off. The lock will come out along with it. Then take some pliers and turn the cap until it comes off.
There are several places to buy a locking gas cap for a 1994 Silverado Z71. Both AutoZone and Advance Auto has locking gas caps.
I have a 2006 QX. I got a locking gas cap from Schuck's and it works well.
On my Ford Explorer , that is equipped with a locking gas cap , I turn and hold the key while I'm unscrewing the gas cap in order to remove it ( to install the cap I don't need the key , just screw it in place ( and in my case I wait until the cap makes a clicking noise )
I don't know. I need to align the metal locking tabs with the plastic ring on the inside of the cap and don't know how to do it.
Vapor locking ...try a new cap
Locking gas caps are available for just about any model at auto parts stores.
assuming you have a screw on plastic locking gas cap you could use a large pair of channel lock pliers to squeeze the sides in and turn it, if it is metal this will damage the cap.
Do you have a locking gas cap?
Yes, there are several aftermarket locking gas caps, check the link I posted.
How do you remove gas cap for 2004 Lexus RX 330?
find and remove gas cap, fill with gas and replace gas cap.
Locking gas caps are available for a '98 Sebring, and is probably a good idea if you have kids or teens playing pranks on you (ie. put sand or syrup in your gas tank). All cars since the early '90 now have a valve in the filler pipe that goes to the gas tank, so that the gas tank can no longer be syphoned out, so you don't need the locking gas cap for that!
