This is the uniqueness of the Trinity of God. God is one God in three Persons. God the Father, and God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God the Father as we know Him today resides in heaven. God the Son (Jesus Christ ) as we know Him today resides in heaven. But approximately 2000 years ago God the Son , Jesus Christ, came to earth born as a Jewish Baby to Mary in Bethlehem. In other words God the Son left His heavenly home with God the Father and took up on Himself a human Body. The Bible tells us that this decision was made by the triune God before the foundation of the earth was laid. This plan was the only way the human race could be saved from destruction and hell. The perfect sacrifice had to be by a man, a sinless man, Jesus Christ, in order for God to accept the sacrifice.

When Jesus was on earth He was the God/Man. He was fully God and He was fully Man. He is still fully God/Man. When Jesus died on the cross He died as a perfect Man dying for mankind's sin. So Jesus as a Man was the mediator or go between, between God and man. It is a hard doctrine to understand but the more you study it the more understanding you receive.

Most often in the Bible covenants were sealed by a blood sacrifice and animals were used for this. In Old Testament times animal sacrifices were a covering of sin so that the people could worship God. On the day of Atonement the animals that were sacrificed only covered a person's sin.

When Christ died on the cross He ushered in a New Covenant (the one Christians are under today). Jesus being the testator had to died in order for the New Covenant (Testament) to take effect. Being Jesus was the perfect sacrifice His blood REMOVED sin, not just covered it like the blood of bulls and goats did.

Even though Jesus died to take away the sin it does not help anyone unless that person, an individual, accepts Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

So because Jesus was a real Man on earth and died on the cross as a real Man he is the Mediator between God in heaven and man on earth.

To take advantage of this perfect sacrifice your heart has to be turned toward God and you have to believe by faith that Jesus died for your sin, was buried, and rose the third day. You have to agree with God that Jesus is Savior, Master, and Lord.

What does a intermediary do?

A Intermediary is the same thing as a mediator. I Timothy 2:5, "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus". A mediator is a connecting link between two parties who want to come to an agreement. In the case of I Timothy 2:5 talking about Salvation Jesus Christ was the connecting link between God and men. Jesus was the perfect mediator as he possessed the nature and attributes of God (He was the Son of God and God Himself) and He (Jesus) was fully a Human Being. Jesus was the God/Man and so was the perfect Mediator. He mediates peace between God and any man who comes to God through Jesus Christ.

Are intercessors appointed by man are called by God?

An intercessor is a mediator that goes between God and man. I Timothy 2:5 says that there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. There is no other way to get to God except through Jesus. But all Christians are called by God to interceed through Jesus for each other by prayer. We are called by God to pray for many other things as well such as those who rule our nations. Intercessors are NOT appointed by other men.

Roman Catholic AnswerThere is not just a "main" mediator: there is only one mediator and that is Our Blessed Lord. Is Mary the one mediator between God and man?

no.....In John 14:6 "No one comes to the father except throught me". This means that Jesus is the only mediator between God and man.Roman Catholic AnswerOf course not. The Bible plainly says that there is one mediator between God and men and that is Jesus Christ. Mary is often titled medatrix to indicate your role as the chief intercessor for men (see James 5:16), but she has no role outside that of her son, she may be the most exalted human being who ever lived, but she is still a creature of God, and does nothing outside of His Will. And the very fact that she is exalted is, as she herself says in her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) is because He (God) has regarded her lowliness, and He has done great things...
