The child should go to a trusted person--a family member, a friend, a teacher or counselor--and let them know what is going on, who abusing them, how long it has been going on. If possible (and I know it's difficult) the child should avoid their abuser as much as humanely possible. If someone is abusing you, the fault fully lies with them, but unfortunately it takes time and red tape to not only have the abuse reported, but to have the abuse officially investigated and the abuser hopefully prosecuted. If it's a parent or other family member living in the home, the child should try to spend more time in their room, away from that individual and to not engage or be drawn into arguments with them. If the abuser threatens to harm you or abuse you, call the police or flee the residence and ask a neighbor to call the police for you. Please take care of yourself. Confide in aunts, uncles, grandparents, and even neighbors or friends. Depends on who doing the abuse. The more people that know something is going on, the faster it stops. Warn the abuser that the abusive practice is common knowledge with people who won't support him (her). Be ready to tell authorities everything when they get involved. You must be ready to end it.

Physical abuse can effect the child in a different way if its one of the parents being abused. For example, if the mother was being abused, the child would feel as if their mother were weak, or be afraid to talk with the mother.
