Crunches are the best way to help rid belly fat. Not only should you do traditional crunches, but you should also target your lower abs and oblique's, which can be achieved through side crunches and bicycles. http://hubpages.com/hub/Stomach_Exercises_to_Eliminate_Belly_Fat
Yes,running 30 minutes 5 times a week loses belly and lowers belly fat and helps to tone abs when eating 1500 calories a day.
No, abs are only on your stomach/belly area, not on your sides.
You can not burn only belly fat. It is impossible to target a single area to burn fat. You must reduce your overall fat percentage which will eventually reduce levels around your belly to be able to show your abdominal muscles. You must reduce your caloric intake below what your body uses in a day in order to create a deficit and beginning burning your fat stores. It is not necessary to have work out machines to get prominent abs. Do a mixture of aerobic, like running, along with military style excercises. Pushups, Situps, Crunches, Leg Lifts, etc. The key to getting a six pack is to reduce your body fat percentage to a level that will reveal your ab muscles.

We have eight pack abs, it is possible to get them to show, it does add a new level of difficulty. The lower set is the hardest to get to show because of the smaller amount of movement that those ab muscles do.

It is very difficult to burn fat from just one place in the body. You have to work on burning it from the whole body to see any difference. If you want to show your abs then continue with the sit ups. It will develop muscle which burns fat and calories more efficiently and will help your stomach look great when the belly fat goes. This is just a guess, but I think it has something to do with your abs stretching. I'm pregnant and around my belly button hurts but I'm pretty sure it's because my abs are starting to spread to make room for my belly to grow more.
