You know ehen your voice is "cracking" when it keeps changing in pitch. As a boy you have a higher picthed voice than an adult man but during puberty your larynx (also called the Adam's Apple or Voice box) grows larger and the pitch of your voice gets lower. At some point you'll think that your voice has "broken" and has gotten permenantly lower, then right in the middle of a sentence it can suddenly "crack" and sound high pitched again. This period of sudden and unpredictable "cracking" of your voice can last for a few months until it eventually settles down to a lower adult pitch.

The reason a boy's voice changes during puberty is that his voice box and vocal cords lengthen. While they are in the process of growing, the muscles in the throat are still learning how to accommodate the changing size, and this results in a squeaky or crackly voice.

It's because of your voice box. When your voice goes crackly it's because your voice box is straining and stretching like a... Violin string.. When you loosen it, it gets deeper. When you stretch it, it gets higher.. So you get the picture

Depending on age, when your voice goes suddenly high and/or low you are entering/in puberty, or your vocal chords have strain on them

Somehow, puberty effects your voice box. So when you talk, your voice box is trying to get used to your new voice, which causes cracks
