An alternative to landfills is recycling. Glass, aluminum and steel cans, and many kinds of plastics can be reused. It takes far less energy to make a can from returned material than it does to make it from scratch.

Food, garden waste and organic material can all be diverted to compost and worm farms. People can be educated and encouraged to have their own compost bins and worm farms where possible.

There has to be a major educational blitz so that people know how and what to recycle. Local authorities and councils have to establish easy ways of collecting and sorting recyclable material and sending it back to where it can be used again. This is easiest with glass and aluminum cans, but plastics are much more difficult.

There may have to be laws passed to force people to recycle, as the cost of having landfills becomes too much.
