Commutators are used on DC motors. the term is also correctly applied ( mainly by the French,) to a balance wheel on a watch. the costly Washington Chronometer ( intended to compete with the Hamilton) had 23 Jewels- plus- Solid Gold commuator screws) The only Pocket watch known to have this refinement in the US.
i have never heard of a commentator in a motor, think you may be mistaking that word. inside an electric motor you have a stator and windings, as polarity changes it spins the stator and the brushes transfer the charge to the device being used.. I think they meant commutator. If you break an electric motor down to 2 parts, you have a commutator and an armature. the armature being the shaft that basically floats on bearings, and the commutator being the hull where the stator is. (and there is such thing as a brushless electric motor.) the stator does not spin. that is the term used for the magnets that pull the electric field supplied by the brushes. To make even more simple, imagine a shaft floating on bearings with 2 magnets on it, one positive and one negative ( the armature) and this shaft is inside of a ring of electricity the is flowing in one direction, its going to pull the negative and push the positive (the commutator) and cause the armature to spin.

A shorted coil or shorted coils in the rotor will cause arcing at the commutator. It should also be noted that if the brushes are damaged badly enough where they make contact with the commutator, this can cause arcing. Oh, and let's not forget that a stuck brush or brush spring will prevent a brush from making proper contact with the commutator. Arcing can result from that, too.
A DC generator has a commutator, a rotary switching system, that connects a different winding of the rotor, for each fraction of a turn. Thus keeping the polarity one way only. The stator windings are fed a proportion of the DC generated, to make an electromagnet. The power is taken off from the rotor via the commutator switching system. An AC generator supplies the rotor with a DC current, via slip rings on the shaft, to exite it. (Makes the rotor an electromagnet) The power is taken off from the stator windings and alternates from one polarity to the other, as the rotor turns inside, producing AC and not having to go through a switching ystem.
