Excess population growth places a strain on the food supply of the population in question. As a worst case scenario, a huge population could wind up eating all the available food and causing the extinction of the species that it eats; after that, there is nothing more to eat and all the members of the huge population will die of starvation. It doesn't often work out that way, but it can.
