Pretty simple.

Okay, so the "Armistice" was signed in 1953, agreed. What did that mean though? It just meant a cease-fire. So guess what, troops remained. And still do till this day (2007). Therefore, to belong to VFW, as Korean War vet, technically is still possible. All VFW requires for eligibility is:

"If you have received a campaign medal for overseas service; have served 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days in Korea; or have ever received hostile fire or imminent danger pay, then you are eligible. "

So this person you're asking about probably did something like this:

Enlisted with one of the services as active duty, was deployed to Korea in 1955, and guarded the 38th parallel after the war during the armistice.

Why did the united States join the war?

The United States joined the Korean War because the US feared that all countries in Asia would be turned to a communist country. At the time of the Korean War, China was a huge factor because China supported North Korea. If the United States did not support South Korea then the domino effect would have been put to effect. In other words.. The United States joined the Korean War to resist communism from spreading.
