Look in a stream or river after a lot of rain and you will see lots of particles being transported downstream eventually to reach a lake or sea. These are tiny bits of rock which have been eroded from hills or mountains. If a spoonful of sediment passes by in a few seconds, how much would pass in a year, or a thousand years, or a million years?
Millions of tons of sediment are worn from the high ground and deposited lower down every year.
