Lent is a period of abstinence in the 40 days before Easter, intended to focus the mind spiritually by denying ourselves the material.

The first way to "get off" is to simply not observe the ritual - nobody is going to imprison or execute you for not doing it. However many people find it useful to 'fast' as part of prayerful observance.

If you want to stay within the [church] law, it is useful to know that in church tradition, particularly observed in Catholic tradition, Sundays in Lent are not part of the fast - in fact you are called to feast on the sabbath so technically if you continue your abstinence on Sundays you are in breach of church law.

What is the Pagan name for lent?

Pagans do not observe Lent. Lent is a Christian practice. Modern pagans call Lent Lent, the same as we call Passover Passover, Ramadan Ramadan and Mothers' Day Mothers' day. Most pagans practice extreme religious tolerance, just because a religious or secular holiday is not "ours" does not mean we do not recognise it.
