That's a good question and one that I think is well worth considering. Though I believe the days of Sunday closings are long gone, the most effective way to have Sunday closings would be to energize a large enough group of people who would totally stop shopping on Sunday. If the stores aren't making money, they simply won't open, and no laws forcing them to close would be needed. Of course, if you've ever tried to energize a large group of people to do anything, you know that people will sit around and gripe about things all day, every day, but very, very few will get off their duffs to do anything about anything. Politically, you could tackle this issue on a local, state, or federal level, but the local level holds the most promise to get the laws enacted. However, you have to realize that, again, a large enough group of people would have to be pushing for the laws to overcome the fact that big corporations are going to be fighting to stay open. You're right back to energizing the masses and the problems related to that. Another obstacle would be that the ACLU would certainly get involved at some point and scream "separation of church and state," since Sunday is associated with people attending church. So, not only would you have masses of people to energize and big corporations to fight, but also the ACLU to deal with, and they are one determined-to-win group of people. Who knows how many other such groups would join in, including all those "don't push your religious beliefs off on me" group. At the state and federal level, I believe you would be wasting your time to even try. I don't mean to sound so negative about this. I think Blue Laws were good and would love to see Sunday closings again, not so much because of my personal religious beliefs, but because I believe a day of rest is good for all people of every belief. I think the only logical thing to do is to choose not to shop on Sunday and encourage others to do the same. The stores are there to make money and if they aren't making it, they won't open. Deb
