On a 1998 Volkswagen Passat the starter is located front of the transmission housing. To replace the starter the car needs to be raised so the starter can be reached from underneath the car.
Check to make sure that the starter wiring has been properly installed.
The starter is probley okay, You need to remove the battery cables and clean them up real good. Then check and clean the negative cable where it hooks to the engine. Clean and check the positive cable where it hooks to the starter. It sounds like the cable that goes to the alternator needs to be replaced. The cable is bad inside where you can't see it. This would be the positive cable. It is hooked to the starter too.
The starter on a 1998 GMC Sonoma is replaced by disconnecting the battery, removing the outer cover, and unbolting it from the engine. The wiring harness can then be disconnected, the starter removed, and a new one put in place.
COULD BE THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR
check fuses & brake lights switch located on brake pedal
check the ECT sensor with a scan tool
Check your electrical connections
check to make you have a good battery, if it is good, it probably needs a new starter.
Probably the rack and pinion needs to be replaced.
It depends on which o2 sensor.
