When searching for a job, it is a good idea to find out what kind of jobs you would be good at. Ask the local employment office to give you an interest inventory or workplace skills assessment.

By "a job that suits you" the question is probably directed at the twin-pronged idea of employment that is personally appealing (you like it) and that takes advantage of your knowledge, skills and ability. A corny but very fine idea is to play around with those "assessment tools" that ask you a bunch of questions to help zero in on what your likes and dislikes are. Professional help (the much underrated school guidance counselor) can provide enormous help. Then look at opportunities (jobs/careers) that have a lot of "good thing" (things you like) about them. An example might be that if you prefer to work indoors, a park ranger's position would be a bad match. Then do an assessment of your education and skill set, including experience - if any. If you are still in school, you need to already be taking course work toward a relevant degree in accounting, history, language or chemistry - something that is required or of greatest advantage to someone in the job you want. If you don't have experience and don't want to go to lots of college, you need to zero in on welding school or look at military (or private sector) technical training. Something like that. The earlier you begin, the better prepared you will be for opportunities in your field of interest. If you want to be a firefighter, for example, count on very stiff competition, and a lot of it. If you want to work with mathematical physicist Edward Witten, you will have to have a PhD in math and/or physics by the time you are 26 or so and you will have to be sharper than a razor. But if you like working outdoors and driving around and talking to people, you may be the next super salesman for agricultural chemical products or commercial animal feeds. We almost all deal in goods or services, and they have to be sold. Additionally, someone has to "fix" the goods from time to time, and someone has to provide the service, be it in a shop, in the home, business or elsewhere in the field, or on the phone. It isn't too late to "change channels" if you are "older" and want a new direction. Courage, a stick-to-it attitude, and a vision of where you want to be are the keys. Good luck.

Try loads of different activities that you enjoy.

Example: I love writing stories so I would like to be an author.

Question: I love art so I want to be some kind of artist or maybe an architect but I love first aid so I want to be a doctor. What shall I do?

Answer: Try both of them several times and see which one you are best at and the one you most enjoy. The one with the highest results is your option.

Remember, when you choose a job, try to make it something you enjoy, it just makes it all the more exciting and it means that you'll be able to have fun when you walk into work in the morning!

The best course to study is the one that leads to your overall career goals and objectives. Thus, I would imagine you do not have anything specific at this time. So many individuals enroll in college programs without a specific goal in mind. As such, many become miserable in their work which is not good for them, or their employer. If you want to be successful in your work and personal life, carefully consider the following.

To be successful in your work, you must acquire a vision. A vision is a clearly articulated picture of the future you intend to create for yourself. In other words, it's a dream. However, if the dream does not have direction, it will always remain a dream and will never become a reality for you. That vision should create a passion within you, a love for what you do and the benefit it will bring to others as well as yourself. Make sure the vision is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and tangible. Let us look at this closer. When you believe you have chosen an appropriate career goal, look at it in SMART fashion as follows.

  • Specific - Make sure your career goal is very specific. For example, "I would like to be a teacher," is not specific. "I would like to be a high school Biology teacher in New Jersey (USA) in an urban school by 2012" is.
  • Measurable - Make sure you can measure your progress. How will I know I am progressing in the right direction? This is where the development of short-term objectives comes in (discussed below). You will know you are on the right path as you accomplish each short -term objective.
  • Achievable - Is the goal achievable considering my current life situation and circumstances?
  • Realistic - Is what I want to do really realistic. For example, "I would like to be a middle weight boxing champion, and I am 63 years old." That is not realistic.
  • Tangible - What will I - specifically - have at the end? What will I be (exactly)? It must be very specific. In addition, you must establish a time frame, with deadlines. The time frame will create a sense of urgency which will limit the possibility of procrastination.

Once you acquire that vision your path will become clear. Still, you will need a mentor, counselor, or coach who will be able to help you develop a road map embedded with short-term objectives leading to your overall career goals and objectives. The achievement of short-term objectives will indicate you are moving in the correct direction, and will also give you energy and excitement to carry on towards your overall career goal. It will take some research, but you most likely have some ideas already. Follow them through, look at the nature of the field, the everyday routine, the required education, the salary, the occupational demand and the related fields. When a career sparks an interest, try to shadow an individual who is actually doing what you think you might like to do. You can pick up valuable information this way. Thus, the following.

  • Acquire the will to change circumstances.
  • Acquire the vision (dream).
  • Develop a road-map embedded with short-term objectives leading to your overall goal and objective.
  • Just do it and do not let go until it becomes a reality.
