You did not say what operating system you were going to put on the hard drive. But if it is windows XP you just have to put the windows XP CD in the CD drive and restart the computer and it should ask you if you want to install...then it will ask if you want to "format" the drive first....say yes...and just let the installation take place....The "formatting" of the drive is what erases everything on the drive...Then after the installation process is finished you should have a "clean" install of windows.."Clean install" is the only way to go in my opinion....Please be aware though that formatting your hard drive erases all data from drive...so if there is anything you want to save you will have to save it to "floppy drive disks" or CD (if you have a CD burner on your system) or to some other removable media....hope this helps

If your booting from a Mac, when Disk Utility sees the HD, you need to format it as---- Mac OS Extended (Journaled)-----, It will also give you an option of partitioning it into 1 large or many smaller partitions.It WILL ERASE everything on that drive so make sure to select the right one.Disk Utility/select your HD/ Erase/ usually defaults to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or select it/ name it/ select Erase... to start it.
