There is an old wives tail that "the rings in the shell of the tortoise could be used for assessing the age of the tortoise." This is not true, because their growth is based on diet. It is impossible to actually know the exact age of a turtle or tortoise unless you knew its birth date.

if you bought it from a GOOD breeder you should have got papers with it's birth date on it.
if you bought it from a pet store, ask the pet keepers what age it roughly is.
if you have NO clue whatsoever, just acept it is a tortoise of know knowing what age it is.
there was some myth about that you could tell the age of a tortoise by its shell sequence, but this is a myth not beileved by many.
