First: You need to know your grandfather's full name, the names and/or initials he typically used, his date of birth, his place of birth, and where he lived before joining the Navy. If your grandfather had a common name, you may need all this information. Second: Search Ancestry.com to locate any records they may have. You might find his draft registration record (original image) as well as his Navy enlistment record. Ancestry.com charges a subscription fee; however, I think they allow trial memberships. Third: Microfilm records are also available at the National Achives (free).
