Look in the upper right-hand corner of your facebook page (it doesn't matter what page is up). There is a white box, type in the name and it will show you all of the people with that name who have a page. You can only see the whole profile if they are your friend or if it's public.
In the upper right-hand corner of your Facebook page, there is a small box that says "Search" in it. Click this box and then type in the name of the person you want to search for. Next, click the magnifying glass symbol and it will take you to a page that lists the results of your search. Click the person you want to add as your friend, and click "Add as Friend" (right next to their name at the top of the page). Or, you can do it directly from the results page; simply click "Add as Friend".
On Facebook mobile, look at the top left hand corner of your screen. You will see a search bar. Type in the person's name in that bar, and you will be able to find anyone with that name (and, if the name isn't too common, you will have a better chance of finding the person you want to look for). Facebook will often show you relevant people first (i.e. friends of your friends).
On the regular Facebook site, type in the person's name in the top and either click on a result or click "view other results." From there, you can choose more precise searching options.
Assuming that the profile you're curious about isn't a bot (an automated program designed to mimic human personality usually for the purposes of gaining data on your Surfing habits or information to gain access to your network), there's the obvious method of accepting or applying for a friend request and then gathering as much data as you can: any friends in common? Do you recognize their location? Where are their pictures taken. If the profile is absent of personalization, meaning, there isn't a lot of stuff on their page, and you don't share any common friends, then it's probably a bot. A good way to verify this with some level of accuracy is to look for any commonality within their friends list. If their friends don't share any educational, employment, or friendship history, than it's probably a bot.
Also, police agencies have been using bots and fake profiles lately to monitor suspicious internet activity within the general population. So it is somewhat cause for concern--just make sure that you don't accept any friend request from anybody that you don't know.
Further, if you have determined that this is a legitimate person but for some reason or another they aren't willing to divulge their identity you can try have a private company run a background check. These companies will require a location, name, and approximate age--at least. These companies aren't free either but usually offer a one-time background check option as opposed to a subscription.
The third option you have is, if you can figure out which county and state they live in you can search through that county's government website for a criminal record. Most stats retain online information regarding their prison population, paroled and non-paroles, so you have the option of going to the Department of Justice's website, for that state, and doing an "Inmate Search" for that party. States vary in their requirements ranging from online and free to lacking online capabilities and costing money.
There are a couple ways to find someone on facebook. One method is to use the search bar at the top right of facebook. Type in the person's name and hit enter on your keyboard. A listing should come up with all the people matching that name. If there are many people with that name, you can narrow down the results by entering a school name, network and etc.
You can also find people by entering in their email address. This is a more accurate and quicker way to find if that person is on facebook.
You look them up by typing their name or email address in the Search Bar at the top on Facebook.
You type in someones name in the search bar and click on the search button.
