leaking spark plug wires can do it and also a clogged fuel filter.
it could have a bad spark plug or a bad spark plug wire a bad coil pack or ecsesive oil leaking past the valve seal and its fouling a plug
blown engine, out of gas janitorial duties.

Replace the fuel filter, that is a good place to start.
I'd check the coolant level first, then the thermostat.

While driving my cavalier will shift into high gear for at least a couple of minutes. Shifting gears,giving it gas does not help. Any suggestions?
If it always goes back to normal later, I'd suspect fuel filter first. But other problems are possible.
