If the sensor is stripped you will have to replace it.
If the fitting or hole it threads into is stripped it is likely you can make oversize threads and use a fitting called a bushing to repair it.
Mind you I got desperate one night and epoxied one in.
Its still working but if I ever have to change it I am toast.

The engine coolant temperature sensor is usually on the front of the engine. The coolant temperature sensor will be in the vicinity of the thermostat housing.
Threads into a coolant passage at the front of the engine near the thermostat housing.
The coolant temperature sending unit (sensor) is located at the front of the engine, next to or very near the thermostat. Be prepared for some coolant spillage and remember to wrap the threads of the new sensor with teflon tape to prevent leaks. Good luck!
If the threads of the sensor are stripped, it must be replaced. When this happens, the threads on the exhaust are usually also damaged. These can be repaired by "chasing" them with the appropriately sized tap. Be sure to use high temp. anti-seize on the new sensor. Sensors should only be removed when the exhaust system is at operating temperature.
You can test the engine coolant sensor by using an ohmmeter. Attach the positive and negative probes to the terminals of the coolant sensor.

The 2003 Mazda engine coolant temperature sensor is located on the front of the engine, above the thermostat housing. The sensor will have to wires leading to it.
