A Kernel Panic can be caused by either software or hardware problems. The details of the problem are saved in the file called panic.log found in the Logs folder in the Library folder. Ensuring that all hardware is functioning correctly and that all software is a legitimate copy and installed correctly you can try and pin down the problem by following Apple's Isolating Isuues advice. (See links below)
Mac OS X is based on the XNU kernel, a microkernel Mach kernel with a BSD userland, which makes Mac OS X's kernel a hybrid-kernel.

Mac OS X uses a Mach kernel and FreeBSD utilities at it's core.
The Mac OS X Kernel is a hybrid based on the XNU kernel derived from the former NextStep implementations. Much of the code is open source and freely available. (See links below)
This is called a Kernel Panic. The Kernel is at the heart of Mac OS X. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, more rarely, damaged or incompatible hardware. If the Mac is literally brand new (just out of the box) then it should be returned and replaced. If it has been used and software installed on it then you need to isolate what is causing the problem. If it always happens while using the same software - stop using that software and check for any updates. Ensure you are obtaining software from reliable legitimate sources. In the Accounts section of System Preferences look at Login Items. These are things that are automatically started when you start using the Mac. If there is anything there that you do not recognise it can be removed with the - (minus) button below the list. (See links below)
Mac OS X is built on the XNU (X is Not Unix) kernel which is a hybrid combining elements of the Mach kernel and FreeBSD.
It can get a kernel panic, which is what a blue screen of death is. What this means is the kernel hits an error it can't recover from. It will either result in the halting or the rebooting of the host system.
Kernel panic, almost anything if on Windows, and probably water.
