Unless you have lineage papers from the breeder/ owner on parents of puppies, I have been told you can not get AKC registered. To my understanding, it is one of the ways to protect standards of the different breeds.
You can get UKC registration form on-line with full explanation. I think you need 2 photos (front, side) plus signed paper from vet stating, to their knowledge, your dog/puppy is of certain breed. (This paper can be found on-line as well.) Newer technology has also allowed owners to get DNA samples from their dogs and have it tested; a little pricey though.

If its a purebreed the usually come with papers if not ask to see the mom and dad.
