A couple of good tips for stripped screws: first you can invest in an "easy-out" bit for a drill. Scouring powder, like ajax or comet, also works well, just dip the tip of your screwdriver into the powder, it will stick to the screwdriver and grip the stripped screw better.
you can also pry up on the screw with a little pry bar or screw driver as you turn it out
