The problem is that you're determined to win over someone who has told you he doesn't share the feelings you have for him, who doesn't want to commit to you. "Not ready for commitment" is usually wordspeak for "I'm not interested in being in a committed relationship with you,". He didn't want to hurt your feelings or come across as a bad guy, he worded things in this way. It's the same with the offer of friendship--it doesn't mean he's a jerk or evil, but it's more a way to placate you then a real desire to be friends with you. Attempting to be friends with him will only make you cling on in hopes of another chance, while you put your life on hold. My boyfriend just recently broke up with me as well.
