First, let us define what leukemia is.
Leukemia is a type of cancer in the blood or bone marrow of an individual that is characterized by a sudden increase in the number of white blood cells in the persons' body. Other symptoms of leukemia includes impaired blood clotting and anemia.
Studies show that in the US, 1 person every 4 minutes is diagnosed with leukemia. Though a bit small in terms of number statistics, considering that this is only in the US and affects around 9% of the population - leukemia is a serious type of cancer that needs a lot of support from government agencies and community
So how do we help people with leukemia?
There are several ways in which an individual can help or at least support an individual who is diagnosed with leukemia.
Let us cite some:
1. Leukemia patients need more sleep. With this, encourage a leukemia patient to get enough sleep, or if possible, more sleep - especially after every treatment procedures of chemo and radiation.
2. Cook healthy food and meals for the person. Help them recover well and regain energy and positive attitude by giving them healthy foods - specifically organic food as much as possible. You may consult the doctor on what nutritional needs does the patient need and what type of food is more applicable to them.
3. Help the individual by letting him or her join a support group, and make them feel that they are not alone, and they can still act, feel and be normal just like others so that they won't feel indifferent.
4. Create a healthy daily routine for the individual
5. Always offer them your support - as a friend and family. Take time to let them join you and know your friends as well, your family as well or let him or her join to normal activities.
6. If there are available programs in your area for leukemia patients, let him or her join the program or session which could help them ask questions and share ideas about their condition.
There are several foundations that you can check and use as support for leukemia patients. One of the known foundations nationwide [US] is the American Cancer Society.
