Before you begin, make sure your PlayStation 3 is properly connected to your networking equipment (i.e., modem, router, etc.) then you need to properly configure your network settings within the PlayStation 3. Within the 'Settings' > 'Network Settings' submenu select 'internet Connection' now choose 'Internet Connection Settings' and follow the onscreen guide to complete the process.
You can have any internet for the ps3, although I'm not sure about dial up. If you have nonwireless internet, you will just have to hook up your ps3 to the internet.

The PlayStation 3 can use either a CAT-5 cable or can connect wirelessly. Typically, it's done wirelessly.
