You could buy an OPK (Ovulation Predictor Kit) or take your BBT (Basal Body Temps) or both. The first one will tell you when your 2 most fertile days are but it's expensive. The BBT will tell you when you already ovulated.

OPK: if you have 28 days cycles you should start using them on your day 11 until you get a positive.

BBT: you should take your temps every morning before you even get up (before you go the the washroom) and make a chart. you'll know you already ovulated when you see a peak in your temps and they stay high for all your LP (Luteal Phase: period of time between Ovulation and the day before of the due date of your next period) If you have regular periods after 3 month of charting you'll be able to know when you are most fertile.

You count the first day of your menstruation as Day 1. On average your ovulation takes place on/around Day 14 so if you're unsure, you could start testing for your ovulation from Day 11. From the moment you have a positive ovulation test (which is meant to show the increase of hormones leading up to your avulation!), you can expect your ovulation to happen within 24-36 hours.

First you have to know your cycle. It is generally assumed that women go off of a 28 day cycle (like myself) while others can differ. You ovulate approximately 7 days after the first day of your last menstrual. Example: If your period came on October 30th 2011 with a 28 day cycle, it is safe to assume you would start to become fertile on the 9th day, but wouldnt ovulate until day 12 or 13. Another way to tell is to get an ovulating kit. Other people take their body temperature orally as soon as they wake up. When you ovulate your temperature is normally a little higher than normal which is also another sign.

Ovulation is difficult to predict because the only thing experts are sure of is that you ovulate 14 days BEFORE the first day of your period. If your cycle is pretty regular, for example 28 days, then you would ovulate on day 14. However, if your cycle is irratic and/or longer - shorter, then you may ovulate on day 17 or 25. The best way to track ovulation is to track your cervical mucus, purchase an ovulation predictor kit (OPK), and or track changes in your cervix.
