Here is the key idea: humans have been around for about two million years and our species of humans has been around for about 200,000 years. Our ancestors evolved and flourished eating a certain kind of diet. The more you eat as they did (lean meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts, etcetera) the better health you are likely to enjoy.

Except, occasionally, for honey, they did not eat anyprocessed (refined) carbohydrates (If you are unsure what constitutes a refined (processed) carbohydrate, see the list, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.) It is likely that the best single step you could take to improve your diet would be to eliminate all processed (refined) carbohydrates (apart from an occasional/rare treat). Furthermore, keep your daily carbohydrate intake relatively low (below about 80 grams) and get all those carbohydrates from natural sources such as organic vegetables and fruits.

You may get up to about one-third of your calories from natural sources of protein such as (unless you are vegetarian) lean meats such as grass-fed beef, seafood such as sockeye (wild) salmon, and cage-free, free range, chicken and eggs. Since your carbohydrate intake will be reduced, get most of the other two-thirds of your calories from natural fats (such as those fats found in natural sources of proteins). If you eat this way, your body will primarily fuel itself using fat rather than sugar. (ALL carbohydrates become sugar when digested.) This will naturally reduce your percentage of body fat and improve your body composition.
