Yeah, that doesn't work on the 1999. The E46 3-series built before 6/2000 has a different way of resetting the service indicator. Location the 20-pin round DLC connector. Pop the hood and it's located to the left side of the car toward the firewall. Remove the cover to get at the pins. Locate pins 7 and 19. Turn the ignition to ON, but, don't start the car. For Inspection Reset short pins 7 and 19 together for 3 seconds. For Service Reset short pins 7 and 19 together for 9 seconds. The easy way is to buy a Peake Research oil/service reset tool.

first, you can't do it by your self, and second, if you want to remove it go to a BMW service shop, but i don't think they know how to do it anyways.
