There is a natural greenhouse effect, supported by the earth's water and carbon cycles, that has kept our planet comfortably warm for millions of years.

The greenhouse effect for global warming, or the runaway greenhouse effect, is happening now because we are burning fossil fuels, more and more every day. This burning releases the carbon that has been kept underground, again for millions of years. This extra carbon dioxide adds to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The natural carbon cycle can't keep up with all the extra carbon, and we have also cut down great forests all over the world that used to absorb carbon, so this is causing the runaway greenhouse effect.

We can slow it by cutting down our use of fossil fuels by making green choices in our transport (walk, cycle, public transport) and by reducing our use of electricity, most of which is generated by burning coal, oil and natural gas. Turning off lights, adjusting our heating and cooling, turning off appliances at the wall and not on stand-by, will all help a little, especially if millions of people do it!
