Salami or hot dog soaked in Anti freeze over 5 hours. place bait on trap and scattered around, make sure to count how many you place on your perimeter, if any of the bait are missing you've killed the rat plane and simple, anti freeze is VERY sweet, I've placed a bowl with Hot Dogs and anti freeze and in the morning i found 1 raccoon and 3 rats dead in my barn. i'd say cheepest method imo.
Answer: well you can call an exterminator but if you don't want to spend much money get mouse traps
Another option: If this is a pet that has escaped from its cage, you can use a live trap that won't harm the rat. If you don't have access to one or want to purchase one, just put peanut butter in a deep trash can and put a ladder, chair or something the rats can climb next to it. They can get in but not out. This worked well for a wood rat that made its way into our home. I heard it in the trash can and knew it was caught. I then released it but we have caught pet rats that way too. Use peanut butter, jam or pecan twirls. Those all work great.
Maybe peg the cage door to the actual cage.
