There are a couple of different ways:
1) Multiple user accounts on one machine - each user can have a different playlist set and a different iPod. Have a non-default location (not 'iTunes Music' folder but a created folder called imusic or something like that) - you can choose what is to be added t iTunes in each account and that way you don't copy music, but have separate iPod music lists. 2) Multiple machines: have a different iPod per machine (and different iTunes list per machine.)

It should automatically sync when you copy them over.
To put a song on your Apple device, you have to download the song onto your computer. Then you upload it into iTunes. Then you can sync iTunes with your device which copies the songs onto it.
