If you go online and check the AKC regulations you will find all of the specifics on the breed. However, if you are looking for a pure bred shepherd make sure the breeder has all of the paper work proving that they are AKC registered. Never buy a puppy without those papers, otherwise your getting scammed and will never see them. My dog is two years old now and when we first got him his ears were still floppy (which is normal for a GSD pup) he also had a really fluffy type of coat. They have an undercoat and when they grow bigger the top coat should be shiny and almost water proof, their ears should stand straight up by themselves. The only time they should really go down is if they are very angry and about to attack. Some agencies recognize pure white or black GSD but mostly they want to see a brown and black or red and black with a saddle mark on its back. I'm not sure on the specifics of the long haired GSD because I only own a short haired one. My dog is a blue and creme colored but the color choice depends on what the breeder has available. But you should really consult a vet or a responsible breeder before making your decision. Also if you do buy a pup make sure you get his hips checked out. GSD's tend to have bad hip problems and you would want to know right away if your puppy has any early symptoms of hip problems.
