Well, if you mean a Siamese fighting fish (betta splendens) the male are always bigger than the females, and usually the males are more colorful. The males have large tails, as the femaleshave small tails and dorsal fins.
look at the color... if its bright and colorful its a male. if its colorless its a female.
If you have both a male and female in the tank and you see eggs, then it did lay them.

No, I wouldn't recommend it. Bettas can be very aggressive, hence the name Siamese fighting fish.
A marine fungus called "Ick" by professional tank cleaners. It's lethal if not treated. Call the fish store nearby, tell them about this, and lay out the surprisingly realilstic amount of green to get the medications. Then fix this. While not 100%, you shuld have a good chance of saving the fish.
It all depends on the length of the fins. If its long its a male if its short its usually a females the exotic colors can help you tell as well.
