The mother will have a dark spot on the lower stomach. A mother fish does eat her fish but you can buy her a fish bed it allows eggs to fall to the bottom & she can't them when they hatch because she can't get out of her bed.
Before Angel fish (Pterophyllum sp) breed they usually wrestle somewhat by locking jaws and tugging. Once they have settled that they are compatible they will clean an area (maybe side of tank if no suitable plants or other flat surface is available). Once they are satisfied the area is clean enough the female will start laying her ova on the selected area . The male will follow her and spread his 'milt' sperm over the ova to fertilise them. A point to remember however is that it is common for two females to get together and then the ova are not fertilised and go white within 24 hrs.
Fish don't actually "mate" in the sense you're thinking. The female fish deposits her eggs in clusters, and the male will fertilize them by releasing a "cloud" of sperm over the eggs.
You will see them chasing around vigourously sometimes even jumping out as if in panic amongst the plants at the surface of the water when they are mating.
