How do you tell if a El Camino is an ss?

You can always tell by the vin. From a distance, they were just a fancier version. Some had a spoiler under the front bumper in the 80's. most (if left original or restored) will have super sport logos on them. By far, the vin is the best way to check, because there are a lot of super sport clones out there being passed off as real ones. There is another way,. look on the build plate in the glove box. If it has an option of Z91 or Z15 it is an SS.

How do you locate a 1968 Impala ss vin 164878J290302?

The vin # is located on the driver side of the cowl above the brake master cylinder/brake booster on the cowl tag. The 1968 chevy vin # does not have a letter or # that tells if the car is a super sport or not. 1967 was the last year that an impala ss was identified in the vin #.

Is there such thing as a 1969 Chevelle Malibu ss 396?

Actually, yes. ALL super sport Chevelles were Malibu's. From 1966-1969 the SS396 was actually it's own model and had it's own VIN code, but they were still built on the Malibu trim package platform. In '64-'65 and '70-'72 the super sport Chevelles shared the same VIN code as the Malibu, for example, a 1970 Malibu coupe has a VIN code of 13637. A 1970 Chevelle SS coupe has the same VIN code, 13637. The same is true for convertibles and El camino's. So while the '69 SS396 was never actually called a Malibu SS396, technically it IS a Malibu in SS396 trim.

What is the difference between a Chevelle and a Malibu?

From 1964 to 1977 the Malibu was a trim package more than anything else. It was a step up from the base Chevelle model, and was generally called a sport coupe. The early super sports were actually called "Malibu Super Sport" before ALL super sports became "SS396" in 1966. By 1970, ALL super sports were Malibius and even shared the same VIN model number as the Malibu. For Coupes, the model number was 13637. While ALL super sports were Malibus, most Malibus were NOT Super Sports. The fact that regular Malibus and Super Sports shared the same model nimber on the VIN is what makes it SO difficult to tell the difference between a genuine Super Sport and a SS clone in 1970 if the car is cloned well. Unfortunately, it also makes it possible to pass off a clone as a genuine Super Sport. In 1978, the Chevelle name was dropped and ALL Chevelles were called Malibus after that.
